Empowering Independence: How Digital Apps are Transforming Lives for Residents with Sensory Loss

Digital access is no longer just a luxury, it is a fundamental part of staying independent and managing our health. However, for residents with sight or hearing loss, inaccessible technology can often lead to isolation and delayed care.

Healthwatch Redbridge is proud to share the final report from a project we funded, delivered by Sensory Specialists Ltd. Over six months, this initiative provided tailored, hands-on digital training to individuals with sensory impairments across our borough.

Bridging the Digital Divide

The project didn't just teach technical skills; it built the confidence needed to navigate an increasingly digital world. Through interactive workshops and personalised home visits, participants learned how to master accessibility features on their own devices.

Key achievements of the project included:

  • Health Management: Participants gained the skills to use the NHS App independently to order prescriptions and manage appointments.
  • Daily Autonomy: Training on apps like Seeing AI and Be My Eyes allowed residents to read correspondence, check sell-by dates, and follow cooking instructions without needing family assistance.
  • Social Connection: Breakthroughs in using video and messaging apps helped reduce the anxiety and isolation often felt by those with sensory loss.

"Life-Changing" Results

The feedback from the project has been overwhelming. One participant noted that being able to read their own mail and navigate maps alone represented a significant "regained life skill." For Deaf participants, visual, demonstration-led learning eliminated long-standing communication barriers.

Looking Ahead

As the independent champion for health and care, we are using the recommendations from this report to advocate for better digital inclusion across the NHS and local authority. We want to ensure that as services move online, no one in Redbridge is left behind.
